Description Ammonia, familiar for its fertilizer-like smell, has begun to move a massive 190-meter-long merchant ship. The 'Antwerp,' built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, is the world's first newly built large merchant vessel designed from the outset for ammonia propulsion and delivered to an actual owner. Batteries are too heavy, and liquid hydrogen faces the barrier of minus 253 degrees Celsius. Methanol generates carbon when burned. Ultimately, the candidate that the global shipping industry focused on was ammonia, which does not contain carbon. However, ammonia has the problem of being difficult to ignite and potentially fatal to humans if it leaks. Korea has solved this issue on an actual vessel by applying technologies such as double piping, leak detection, forced ventilation, automatic shut-off, and exhaust gas treatment. What is more important is not just a single ship. In Ulsan, shipyards that build vessels, factories that produce engines, and ports that supply green ammonia are all concentrated in one place. Korea is aiming to go beyond the construction of ammonia carriers to secure a leading position in engines, fuel supply systems, bunkering, safety standards, and international standards.
