The Key to Caen: Defending Château de la Londe, June 1944

The Key to Caen: Defending Château de la Londe, June 1944 With Richard Brouwer Part of our Normandy series    • DDay and the Battle of Normandy   of our British Army series    • British Army in WWII   Part of our Panzers series    • Panzers - German Armour in WWII   Part of our German Forces series    • Third Reich and German Forces   Allied invasion plans called for the British (landing at Sword and Gold) and the Canadians (Juno) to capture Caen on the first day to protect the American flank and to form an anchor point for a defensive cordon 10 to 16 km from the beaches. Possession of Caen would also provide Anglo-Canadian forces with a suitable staging area for a southward push to Falaise and an eventual left pivot to advance towards the Seine. If Caen was the door out of the Normandy bridgehead, then Château de la Londe on its northern outskirts was the lock.
