Possession of Caen would also provide Anglo-Canadian forces with a suitable staging area for a southward push to Falaise and an eventual left pivot to advance towards the Seine. If Caen was the door out of the Normandy bridgehead, then Château de la Londe on its northern outskirts was the lock.
