It is also a tale of espionage as British military intelligence found the information smuggled out to be of great use for the planning of the liberation of the Channel Islands from the tyranny of the German forces. They also brought important news on conditions both to the government and to fellow Channel Islanders cut off from their loved ones. It is no mean feat to escape, often in a small boat, from islands so far from England where there were at times one German for every three civilians on islands that had been turned into fortresses.
