Established in 1899 as the nation’s fifth national park, it protects alpine meadows, forest land, and more than 25 major glaciers—the most on any single peak in the continental United States. The park comprises approximately 369 square miles of protected wilderness with over 260 miles of maintained hiking trails and is one of the most ecologically diverse national parks in the Pacific Northwest. The park is known for its abundant wildlife and a mix of wildflower meadows, rushing waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks.
