A black Volvo S40 arrived with a complaint of high oil consumption in the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine. A visual inspection underneath and under the hood revealed no signs of leaks or fogging. It's possible that oil is leaking through the combustion chamber. To confirm this, simply inspect the cylinders with an electronic endoscope. The interior of cylinders 1, 2, and 5 is perfectly clean. However, carbon deposits and traces of oil are present in cylinders 3 and 4. Furthermore, oil is clearly leaking from above, through an open valve. Now it's clear that the engine's valve stem seals are worn, and there's no need to completely open the cylinder head. Simply remove the valve cover, replace the valve stem seals, gaskets, and seals.
