The Summer I Almost Gave Up Beekeeping — and What Brought Me Back
This is a different kind of video than I usually make. There was a morning, about ten years ago, when I stood in my apiary with a hive tool in my hand and decided I was done keeping bees. Not for the season. For good. After more than forty years and four generations of beekeeping on this land. I had lost my wife the winter before. That spring I lost five colonies over the winter, some of them through my own inattention. The weather turned against me. The dearth hit hard. By late August I had four weak colonies left out of twelve, and a beekeeper tending them who could barely make himself walk out to the bee yard. This is the story of that summer, the morning I decided to quit, and the very small thing that changed my mind and brought me back. It is not a beekeeping technique. There is nothing here to apply to your hives. But it is the truest thing I know about this work — that it will break your heart sometimes, and it will also, if you let it, be part of how your heart mends. If you are standing at your own version of that morning — with your bees, or with anything else you have given your life to — I hope this reaches you. ———————————————————— CHAPTERS 0:00 The morning I decided to quit 2:30 What led up to it — losing Eleanor 6:30 The bad season begins 10:30 The losses keep coming 13:30 The morning under the apple tree 17:00 What changed 20:30 What I understood 24:00 For anyone standing at that threshold 26:00 Closing thoughts ———————————————————— This channel is usually about the practical side of beekeeping — seasonal care, hive management, the old methods.
