Don't Throw Away Your Wax — This Is What Old Beekeepers Did With It

Most beekeepers I have known throw away their wax, or leave it accumulating in a corner of the barn until they eventually throw it away. That is a real loss. Beeswax is one of the most useful natural products in existence, and there are traditional ways to sort it, process it, and use it that have almost been forgotten. I learned everything I know about wax from a candle maker named Silas Cobb, who ran a small shop in the next town over from 1946 until his death in 1993. His father learned the craft in the 1890s. Silas learned it from him in the 1920s. He taught it to me across seventeen summers of visits from 1976 onward. In this video I walk through what he taught me — how to sort your wax into three grades before processing, how to melt it safely using the double boiler method that has been used for centuries, how to filter it clean, and what to do with it once you have it. Candles, wood finish, leather conditioning, foundation dipping, and many other traditional uses that most beekeepers today have never learned. Plus the one time Silas was wrong about a batch of my wax, and what he said to me about the difference between careful skepticism and unnecessary fear.
