Preparing your new Herding Puppy for livestock training.
When you first get your new border collie or other breed of herding puppy you will introduce him to a collar and begin lead training. In the meantime you should bond with your puppy and begin socializing him and build his confidence and patience. As soon as he’s ready to listen begin Foundational training which includes lie down, walk up, hold/stay, and to come when you call him. Foundational training should be ten to fifteen minutes per day. At about eight weeks old I introduce my puppy once a week to gentle sheep so that he can discover the thrill, joy and excitement of discovering his natural instincts before he has too much obedience training on him. Building a firm foundation on your puppy will give you a happy, respectful, confident herding puppy upon which all future herding training will be added upon.
