Reclaiming the narrative: Rwanda, 20 years later. | Debra Kamin | TEDxPorto

Two decades after its horrific genocide, Rwanda is an African success story. Its cities boast high-tech hubs and luxury hotels. Its countryside is dotted with reconciliation villages, where Hutu and Tutsi live side by side. But in a country where no one emerged the genocide unscathed, triumph is not in spite of trauma. It's because of it. Debra Kamin is an award-winning American journalist and travel writer. She is a regular contributor to The New York Times, and her work has also appeared in Newsweek, TIME, Foreign Policy, The Guardian, Variety, The Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and beyond. Kamin has written extensively about tourism in modern Rwanda, and in 2017 she was sent on assignment to Kigali by The New York Times to write ""36 Hours in Kigali,"" part of the newspaper's long-running and prestigious series of guides to destinations around the world. Kamin holds a master's degree from the University of Chicago, where she wrote her thesis on societies recovering from mass trauma and conflict. She lives in Tel Aviv with her husband and twin daughters, and is currently working on a memoir. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
