40th Anniversary of Sports Review of the Year. Part 1/4. Presented by Harry Carpenter.
This special BBC programme, presented by Harry Carpenter, was broadcast in December 1994 and celebrated the fortieth anniversary of Sports Review of the Year. It is almost entirely complete other than some small edits for copyright reasons and has been reposted after the earlier being blocked due to copyright claims. Harry speaks with the original editor (Paul Fox), the original presenter (Peter Dimmock), the first winner in 1954 (Chris Chataway) and the most recent winner in 1993 (Linford Christie). All the winners are included along with sports clips, montages, interviews, stunts, awards and facts and stats. It was originally called The Sportsview Personality of the Year award and only those sportsmen and women who had actually appeared on Sportsview (the BBC's newly launched mid-week sports show presented by Peter Dimmock in 1954) were eligible for the vote. The 'view' part was dropped a few years later, thereby starting a decades-long debate about what actually constitutes a 'sports personality' ! Presenters featured include Peter Dimmock, David Coleman, Harry Carpenter, Jimmy Hill, Frank Bough, Steve Rider and Desmond Lynam.
