The story of Ayrton Senna's first win | Lotus 97T returns to Estoril 🇵🇹🇧🇷

Legend is a word that gets thrown about too much in the sporting world, but it couldn't be more appropriate for Ayrton Senna da Silva. He solidified his legend status by winning three Formula One World Drivers' Championships, but the signs were always there early on. His drives for Toleman, especially the iconic 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, were champion-in-waiting performances. However, it wasn't until 1985 where we'd see his talents secure an F1 win. It was the 1985 Estoril Grand Prix where Senna achieved that first win, and it is that Lotus 97T, in full JPS livery, that we celebrated at the 82nd Goodwood Members' Meeting. We were lucky enough to speak to the people who knew Ayrton best about just how special a driver and person he was. Along with his nephew Bruno, we spoke to a number of people, including his mechanic at Lotus, Chris Dinnage, and caught up with his friend and photographer, Keith Sutton, at the emotional return to Estoril on the 40th anniversary of the win. It's moments like this that remind us just how special a place Goodwood is, and we'll endeavour to keep historic motorsport stories like this alive.
