Colombo — Il più grande errore della storia che ha cambiato il mondo | Documentario
Christopher Columbus is perhaps the most discussed and misunderstood figure in modern history. Everyone knows his name, everyone knows that in 1492 he crossed the Atlantic with three ships. But how many truly know his story? How many know that a shipwreck brought him to Lisbon, where his great project was born? That his calculations were wrong, and that precisely that error made the voyage possible? That he died without understanding what he had found, and that the continent was named after another man? In this ten-part documentary, Marco Valenti reconstructs the life of Christopher Columbus from his childhood in Genoa to his death in Valladolid, following the most reliable historical sources. A story that goes beyond dates and routes, but delves into the mind and inner world of an extraordinary and contradictory man: a brilliant navigator, a ruthless governor, and a mystic convinced he was an instrument in the hands of God. The documentary explores fifteenth-century Genoa, a crossroads of trade and cultures, where the young Columbus learned about the sea before even learning to read it on maps. It follows his arrival in Lisbon, the discovery of the great geographers of antiquity, his obsessive reading of Marco Polo and Ptolemy, and the birth of his plan to reach Asia by sailing west. It recounts the seven years he spent at the Spanish court of Ferdinand and Isabella, amidst rejections, expectations, and a final twist that changed the course of history. The heart of the documentary is the four voyages: the crossing of the Sargasso Sea on the night of October 12, 1492, the first contact with the Taíno, the founding of Fort Navidad, and the construction of the first European colony in the Americas. But also the progressive deterioration of the colonial project, the violence, the denunciations of the friars, the return in chains from the third expedition, and the final voyage in search of a strait to Asia that didn't exist. Alongside the story of Columbus, the documentary tells the parallel story of maps: how European cartographers transformed the admiral's voyages into shared knowledge, why the new continent was called America and not Colombia, and what the realization that a fourth part of the Earth existed that no geographical or biblical tradition had ever contemplated meant for the entire world. The documentary rigorously and balancedly addresses the most difficult questions surrounding Columbus: his role in initiating the colonial process, the devastating consequences of contact on indigenous populations, and the historical debate over his legacy. Without simplifications or anachronistic condemnations, but with the clarity that history requires when the facts are inconvenient.
