Sly and the family Stone - If you want me to stay (Bass cover with tabs)

Bass cover with transcription of " If you want me to stay" by Sly and the Family Stone, from the album "Fresh" (1973). While this song is often associated with Larry Graham, the bass on the original recording was actually played by a very young Rustee Allen. The song is well known for its "short-long pattern", accenting on the downbeat. Another key detail is the right-hand technique. The bass line was recorded almost entirely using the thumb, in a percussive, “almost slap” style. It’s not slap as we know it today, but you can clearly hear the roots of what would later evolve into the double-thumb technique that Victor Wooten made famous years later. One thing that always stands out when playing along is the pitch of the original recording. The track sits somewhere between A major and Bb major, most likely because it was recorded in A and later sped up during production — a common studio practice in the early ’70s that gives the song its slightly tense, lifted feel.
