How many people would you be willing to kill for the chance to build a genuinely multiethnic Malaysia in which everyone can live with dignity and respect? In this recorded talk from The Unredacted Book Tour, historian PJ Thum asks the audience to confront the choices facing Singapore’s political leaders between 1963 and 1965. Through three options, representing the different positions taken by the PAP leaders, the audience must decide what they would have done, what risks they would have accepted, and how many lives they would have been prepared to sacrifice. The talk draws on "The Albatross File Unredacted", PJ’s response to the official Albatross File exhibition. It examines what the exhibition leaves out, how those omissions change our understanding of merger and separation, and why history looks very different when Lee Kuan Yew is treated as a political actor making difficult and consequential choices rather than as a figure being carried helplessly by events.
