Born in Extremadura in 1598 and trained in Seville during the Golden Age, he developed a unique body of work marked by silence, chiaroscuro, and an extraordinary ability to transform matter into spiritual experience. The Prado Museum defines him as the great painter of Spanish monastic life. In this video, we explore his biography, the historical context of the Counter-Reformation, 17th-century Seville, the religious orders that fostered his career—Carthusians, Mercedarians, Dominicans, and Hieronymites—and analyze some of his most important works: Saint Hugh in the Carthusian Refectory, Saint Serapion, Agnus Dei, his female saints, and his celebrated still lifes. We will also examine his relationship with Velázquez, the influence of Caravaggio, and the reasons why he remains one of the most fascinating artists in the entire history of Spanish art. A journey through painting, philosophy, religion, and history to discover how one artist was able to transform silence, light, and contemplation into some of the most powerful images ever created.
