Curing your depersonalization by ignoring it....DON'T DO IT!
Here I talk about some of the most popular advice on curing / healing depersonalization / derealization: just ignore it. Stop thinking about it, and it will go away. I'm here to say: DON'T DO THAT! Don't ignore your dpdr! Instead, let's learn how to accept it. Many if not all of us who suffer with dpdr have deeply entrenched coping mechanisms that center on avoidance and escapism. I refuse to reinforce those behaviors in myself anymore, or in others who are suffering with dpdr. And telling someone to "ignore" the discomfort of dpdr is doing just that! Bad news!!! Distracting yourself is important, but only when it exists alongside the acceptance of the intense emotion (or lack of emotion) you're feeling. In my view, "ignoring" and "ruminating" are two ends of the "control spectrum". And trying to control your thoughts and feelings will only feed your dpdr. SO: how do you learn to accept feeling so bad all the time?!?! First, watch this video! Read about DBT and ACT! They are PHENOMENAL and have been central to my healing.
