In July 1942, after fierce fighting, Nazi troops succeeded in occupying the right bank of Voronezh. The commanders of the occupying forces established a regime of violence and terror in the captured territory, aimed at the mass and systematic extermination of the city's civilian population. Hundreds of civilians who were being treated in a civilian hospital fell victim to enemy bombing and shelling during the battle for Voronezh. In late August 1942, vehicles covered with tarpaulins drove up to the hospital with the intention of evacuating it from the city to neighboring villages. However, upon leaving the city, the vehicles immediately turned off the road and stopped at a small ravine. German soldiers demanded that the people exit the vehicles, and the mass execution began. The executioners pushed the helpless people down and shot them point-blank; those who tried to resist were killed with rifle butts to the head. The Nazis spared no one, even infants; they were shot in their mothers' arms. This wasn't the only trip; several were made. The only living witness to the mass execution was Anna Fedorovna Popova, who managed to survive the shooting by chance, then crawled out from under the corpses and hid. After the liberation of Voronezh, she recounted the tragedy of Peschany Log and pointed out the execution site. Excavations were conducted at the site over three days, from October 7 to 9, 1943. The remains of 452 people, including 35 children, were recovered from the ravine. The names of 171 of the buried are known, including 114 women and 57 men. After the end of the war, a monument was erected at the mass grave. A plaque reading "Eternal Memory to the Victims of Fascism" was installed on the front surface of the pedestal. Beneath it was an image of a laurel branch, under which the inscription continued: "Here lie buried 452 residents of the city of Voronezh, shot at this site in 1942 by the Nazi invaders." The author of the design is unknown. In 1975, construction of the memorial complex was completed in Peschaniy Log. Two memorial signs, located on either side of the log, symbolize the gates – the entrance to the complex. The first zone is the road of death. This dirt road leads to a wall near a high cliff – the second zone of the complex, the execution site. A granite staircase leads from the ravine to the third zone – the burial site. 452 gravestones are arranged in neat rows on the burial ground.
