Newari Culture Wedding of Reeya & Dawa

21st November 2024:Dawa Steven Sherpa (groom) and Reeya Shrestha (bride) are getting married in two different cultural traditions. Reeya, following Hindu culture, was married on 21st November 2024, and Dawa Steven, following Sherpa tradition, will be married on 24th November 2024. In the morning, Dawa Steven's family and close friends gathered at Astrek Park, Thamel, for breakfast. Accompanied by a band (Band Baja), the group left around 11 AM for the Newari wedding of Reeya Shrestha and Dawa Steven Sherpa at Hotel Himalaya, Kupondole. The groom's team was warmly welcomed with flowers and Khatas by Reeya's family and friends. Upon arrival, the Hindu wedding puja and celebrations commenced, and the festivities continued until 5 PM. Later, with the Band Baja, Dawa's team returned with Reeya to Astrek Park, where everyone enjoyed a delightful evening together. During the Newari wedding ceremony, a playful tradition took center stage as the bride’s friends hid the groom’s shoes during the marriage puja. Following custom, the groom’s friends had to negotiate to get them back, leading to lively and humorous exchanges. The bride’s friends initially demanded an extravagant sum of Rs. 10,00,000, but after much banter and bargaining, they settled for Rs. 20,000.
