Hatsuda's life has been a constant series of life-threatening situations and poverty. He was 2 years old when the war ended. Naturally, he has no memories of that time. He was raised by a Chinese family in Fengtian, formerly Manchuria (now Shenyang). However, during the Cultural Revolution, which began in the late 1960s, he was persecuted for being Japanese. Even after diplomatic relations between Japan and China were restored in 1972, he was forced to move from one rural village to another. His longing for his homeland, Japan, grew stronger. However, it wasn't until nine years later, in 1981, that the remaining orphans were finally able to return to their homeland. Many of them waited until they were middle-aged. The government did not provide sufficient support to those with limited Japanese language skills, and as many as 70% of orphans continued to live on welfare, subject to severe restrictions. Hatsuda returned to Japan at the age of 44. He continued working in manual labor, but retired at age 60. Immediately after retirement, his only income was a monthly employee pension of 50,000 yen. "I want to be independent while I can still work," he said. He now lives with his wife in public housing in Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture, collecting aluminum cans. The orphans took their suffering after returning to Japan to court. While many remaining orphans remain frustrated by the government's failure to acknowledge responsibility, they choose to continue living off support programs. However, Hatsuda refuses to apply for "subsidies" and continues to collect aluminum cans. Why is Hatsuda so adamant? To learn more about Hatsuda's life, we accompanied him to Shenyang, China, in March of this year. There, our reporting team witnessed the deep emotional scars of Hatsuda, who was unable to even visit his adoptive mother's grave. Hatsuda speaks to the grave. "Mom, you'll be angry with me, you'll think I'm stupid. But now I understand. The most important thing is to live with pride. To live a life I'm not ashamed of..." He then clung to the small grave and burst into tears, saying, "I feel so sorry when I see this tiny grave."
