Itsuki Ito (20), a member of the Japanese Paralympic team. At the age of eight, while on his way to ice hockey practice in a car driven by his mother, Beniko, he was involved in a traffic accident and suffered a spinal cord injury. He was forced to live in a wheelchair. "I wish it had been my hands instead of my legs," he muttered after the accident. At the age of nine, Itsuki discovered para ice hockey. He developed a dream of competing in the Paralympics. Beniko also suffered a serious leg injury in the accident, but she never missed driving him to and from practice, no matter the time. "Driving is scary, but he wants to do it, so I want to let him." Itsuki's dream became Beniko's dream. As a junior high school student, he steadily improved, participating in training camps for the Japanese national team and becoming Japan's ace. However, at the Beijing Paralympics four years ago, he couldn't even participate in the qualifying tournaments due to age restrictions, and his team was defeated. In a joint practice with the US team, who won the gold medal in Beijing, he couldn't score a single point, realizing the immense gap between him and the world's best. After graduating from high school, Itsuki left his mother and moved to the United States alone to join a team. He chose to train alone in a foreign land with the goal of competing in the Milan Paralympics. Then came the final qualifying tournament in Norway, where the top two out of six countries would qualify. After losing their first match against South Korea, they were in a desperate situation. In the second match, they trailed until the very end, and just when defeat seemed inevitable, a dramatic turn of events occurred… After the match, Itsuki murmured, "The hockey gods told us we can still play hockey." His coach also revealed his true feelings: "We put the team's fate on Itsuki Ito." The reporting team meticulously documented his 11-year journey from becoming paraplegic to achieving his dream.
