Mozart "Jupiter" Symphony (Albert Coates, 1923)
Mozart: Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K. 551 ("Jupiter") Symphony Orchestra conducted by Albert Coates Recorded August 27 (first movement) and October 16 (remainder), 1923, in the Gramophone Company's Recording Room No. 1, Hayes, England, on 78-rpm matrices Cc3362, Cc3364, and Cc3644 through Cc3648. Issued in January, 1925, as HMV D 942 through D 945; the set remained available until March, 1928, at which time it was replaced by Coates' electrically-recorded remake on D 1359 through D 1362. In the USA, the set was issued late in 1925 as Victor Blue Label 55277 through 55280. The symphony takes seven sides; the filler is the Overture to Mozart's one-act comic opera "Der Schauspieldirektor" (The Impresario), K. 486, which I have uploaded separately. The orchestra for this recording consisted of 29 players: 4 first violins, 4 seconds, 3 violas, 2 cellos, 4 double basses, 1 flute, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 1 contrabassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 1 tuba and timpani. This may well be the fastest performance of the "Jupiter" Symphony on record, and all exposition-section repeats are taken - even the one in the slow movement, for perhaps the only time on 78-rpm records. (It wasn't taken on Coates' electrical remake.) The "Jupiter" Symphony is in four movements: 1. Allegro vivace 2. Andante cantabile (at 7:37) 3. Menuetto (at 17:05) 4. Molto allegro (at 20:33)
