Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1936. He held a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1972. He subsequently exhibited his work in international biennales, including those in Paris, Venice, and São Paulo, and has held solo exhibitions at museums around the world, including the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), the Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain (Paris), and the State Museum of Oriental Art (Moscow). He has also held a series of solo exhibitions in Japan, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka, and in 2012 he opened the Hyogo Prefectural Yokoo Tadanori Museum of Contemporary Art in Kobe, and in 2013 the Teshima Yokoo Museum in Kagawa. He was awarded the Mainichi Art Award in 1995, the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette and the Asahi Prize in 2011, the Praemium Imperiale in Memory of Prince Takamatsu in 2015, an Honorary Citizen of Tokyo in 2020, and a member of the Japan Art Academy in 2011.
