Son of Toshimitsu Imai, a leading painter of Art Informel. After graduating from high school, he moved to England and studied under photographer David Bailey. From the 1980s, he was in charge of live painting and commercial space displays. After that, he pursued his own unique abstract expression and has continued to create paintings. He received the Encouragement Award at the Shinobazu Object Exhibition (1989) and was selected as the Japanese representative and overall winner at the 4th Sharjah Biennial in the United Arab Emirates. * His father, Toshimitsu Imai (1928-2002), was born in Kyoto and raised in Senba, Osaka. He studied under Ryuzaburo Umehara and Sotaro Yasui. He studied oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts and studied in France. He became acquainted with Sam Francis and Michel Tapié, and in the 1950s, he brought a new trend to the Japanese art world. He was an Informel painter and was based in Japan and Paris. He received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, the Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour, and the Commander of the French Order of Arts and Letters. He passed away in 2002.
