Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 26: Viterbo to Vetralla

Viterbo to Vetralla (1 day; 17.7 km) Leaving the modern traveller with enchanting canyon-like passages, the ancient Etruscans carved out much of today's route from tufa, a soft sedimentary rock (different from the volcanic tuff we encountered two days ago in Orvieto). This strange landscape finally gives way to open, verdant fields and eventually the town of Vetralla. There we stay in a refined, character apartment, outfitted in equestrian accoutrements. We dine on award-winning pizza made from Manitoba flour. We feel at home.
