QuanTIM Webinar - Olivier TELLE, CNRS, UMR Geographie-cités, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne Urban Metabolism and Vector-Borne Diseases: The Example of South and Southeast Asia Description: In Southeast Asia, as elsewhere, the city is a flow machine (mobility, water, waste, energy) that reconfigures ecosystems. This reconfiguration is not neutral: the circulation of the virus follows human networks, while the ecology of the vector (urban heat, stored water, fragmentation and loss of vegetation) is anchored in often subordinate socio-environmental gradients. This presentation offers a “metabolic” perspective on arboviruses: how the material transformations of urban environments create both inequalities in exposure and landscapes conducive to transmission. This presentation, based on fieldwork conducted in India, Thailand, Laos, and Singapore, will provide an opportunity to revisit the integration of epidemiological, environmental, and social data in health geography, using statistical models and GIS.
