South Austin Trail Network - Slaughter Creek Trail

The Slaughter Creek Trail is a five mile loop in Southwest Austin that is part of the South Austin Trail Network region. To my knowledge it is the only sanctioned singletrack in the network, and is maintained by the Austin Ridge Riders MTB Club. In addition to bikes, the trail welcomes horses and hikers (opposite direction), but leave the pup at home since dogs are not allowed. Slaughter Creek is best described as cross country, with sparse technical sections and a few short ledges that add some excitement to the ride both up and down. This is a good place for fitness; save the steeze for another trail. The highlight is the scenery. It showcases the Blackland Praire and Hill Country landscape of Central Texas in a setting close to the city. It's beautiful at sunset, but this is playing with fire... there is an automatic gate that closes at dusk, so you may get shut in. If you think you are at risk, it would be best to park elsewhere and pedal there on the trail that runs alongside 1826. This was my second ride there since my ten year MTB hiatus, and my first time on full-sus. The Jeffsy seemed to enjoy it as much as I did.
