πŸ“šπŸ“š REVIEW of the science fiction novel "Children of Ruin" by Adrian Tchaikovsky, the second in the "Children of Time" series, although all three can be read independently πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ πŸ”΄ If you want to buy the book: https://amzn.to/4mLTuMb It's very much a continuation of the previous work, in that it deals with two parallel storylines of two different civilizations that eventually clash and span millennia. It has similar plot twists, but they aren't as well executed, resulting in too many coincidences and easy, predictable resolutions. Finally, the new species he decides to give intelligence to, the octopuses, doesn't have as believable a development as the spiders, and the pacing suffers due to over-explaining their behavior and the difficulties of their language. Without a doubt, Tchaikovsky's world-building is One of its strengths has always been its writing style, and although I don't like everything in it, it still has surprising elements and brilliant ideas, particularly in the design of the spaceships. However, the prose remains somewhat unclear in conveying certain ideas or scenes and contains grammatical errors, which, taken together, can be confusing regarding what's happening, especially in specific details. However, this doesn't prevent the reader from enjoying the novel itself. Given the variety of species that appear in this novel, the narrative style and the type of narrator are adapted to each species to make the story more believable, something Tchaikovsky knows how to use effectively, even though the characters are somewhat rough around the edges when focusing on civilizations. In short, it's a novel that doesn't quite reach the heights of the first, but it also has noteworthy elements and doesn't discourage you from continuing with the series.
