๐๐ REVIEW of the classic science fiction novel "Ringworld" by Larry Niven, the first in the saga of the same name - but I'll only be reviewing this one ๐๐ ๐ด If you want to buy the book: https://amzn.to/3LvYGWn Published in 1970, it had a huge impact on the genre, quickly becoming a classic for its brilliant concept of the ringworld itself, an idea that has been reused by many creators and has sparked the interest of many engineers. I think this idea is what earned it very good reviews and many awards, but, beyond this and its world-building in general, once the first third of the book is over, the story starts to falter and the characters end up being one-dimensional. Therefore, it's the most brutal clash I've read in the genre between a magnificent idea and poor execution: one-dimensional characters, a soporific pace, and a plot that doesn't know where or how to end; in addition to the handicap of the blatant sexism that permeates the entire novel and ends up being insulting. It takes place in the 29th century and deals with how a group of four adventurers, two humans (Louis Wu and Teela Brown) and two extraterrestrials, embark on a mission to investigate an artificial megastructure found orbiting a star, shaped like a ring with a diameter of almost 3.4 billion km. The novel is narrated with prose that could be improved, with quite a few crutches in the writing, but it's not the worst style I've read, and it certainly starts with a good balance of its elements in its first third, even blending the scientific explanations well with the narrative itself. However, towards the end of the first third, when the structure of Ringworld comes into play, it seems Niven doesn't know how to integrate the action with an interesting plot, and the story becomes an endless, aimless wandering. Nevertheless, even after ending up hating the protagonist and plodding through the second half of the book, it's a novel worth reading for the incredible world it presents and its importance to the genre.
