Juan José Sierra, vice president of Coparmex, assessed the impact of the United States' unilateral decision not to extend the USMCA trade agreement for 16 years, maintaining the agreement for ten years but subject to annual reviews. Sierra warned that these periodic evaluations create uncertainty for companies planning for the long term, in a context where the appetite for investing in the country has already fallen 12.8 percentage points due to insecurity, political instability, and a lack of economic certainty. Ahead of the upcoming bilateral meeting on July 20, the business leader pointed out that the Washington government prioritizes national security and fentanyl control over trade, and therefore urged Mexico to offer legal and energy certainty to avoid losing opportunities for supply chain relocation.
