The 43rd IRINO PRIZE: Durant l’éternité de Timée for 8 instruments by Demian RUDEL REY

The 43rd IRINO PRIZE, awarded in 2021, was jointly received by two composers, Demian RUDLE REY and Zhuosheng JIN. The winning composition of RUDEL REY, 'Durant l’éternité de Timée', was performed by Ensemble NOMAD at The 4th Irino Prize Chamber Music Concert in Tokyo in December 2025. Performers: N.Sato (conductor), D.Kinowaki(fl), H.Kikuchi(cl), S.Sato(trp), H.Imagome(trb), W.Hanada(vl), T.Kikuchi(vc), N.Miyamoto(perc), and R.Takano(hp) Programnote of 'Durant l’éternité de Timée' (2020): Durant l’éternité de Timée for flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, percussion, harp, violin and cello, is a piece composed for the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain and Bruno Mantovani. The work is inspired by a Platonic dialogue between Socrates, Critias, Hermocrates, and Timaeus of Locri. In the text, Plato asserts that the planets, although originally perfectly aligned, will return to their state of equilibrium after completing their trajectory. Jorge Luis Borges also uses this image in his text “Historia de la eternidad” (in English: A History of Eternity), in which he invents an imaginary dialogue with other philophers. These speculations about the perception of time trigger ideas about temporality that are explored throughout the piece. The mobile and the immobile, the chaotic, the circular, the eternal are temporal states that are integrated in the different sections. These, sometimes overlapping, sometimes juxtaposed, will converge in a single context, towards the point of origin. Biography of : Demian RUDEL REY https://demianrudelrey.com.ar/biograp... The prize is administered by the IRINO Prize Foundation, which was founded after his death on June 23,1980, by Mrs.Reiko Takahashi IRINO in collaboration with renowned composers Maki ISHII, Joji YUASA and Yori-Aki MATSUDAIRA. The IRINO PRIZE is awarded to young composers who explore new directions and demonstrate innovative creativity. The IRINO PRIZE consists of two categories; one for Chamber-Orchestral Work (between 9 and 17 instruments) held in even-numbered years, and another for Chamber Music (no more than 8 players, with or without electroacoustic component), held annually.
