GFOI R&D Exchange: Country-identified R&D needs for forest and land monitoring

The Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) Research and Development (R&D) Coordination Component hosted the fifth session of the virtual GFOI R&D Exchange series, “Country-identified R&D needs for forest and land monitoring”, on 16 June 2026 from 15.00 to 17.00 CEST (UTC+2). The session highlighted key R&D gaps in forest and land monitoring, emphasizing the role of research collaboration and AI in addressing country reporting needs. More than 165 participants joined the virtual exchange, with 44 percent identifying as women, bringing together national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory compilers, remote sensing specialists, policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders working on forest and carbon monitoring from across the globe.
