In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view from Chambéry (Challes-les-Eaux) to Modane across the Maurienne Alpine Line, France, in 4K/60 frames per second. On this journey we travel from Chambéry-Challes-les-Eaux into the heart of the French Alps, finishing in Modane, on the historic Culoz–Modane railway (also known as the Maurienne Line). This route is approximately 71–72 km long. The line was opened in stages between 1856 and 1871, built by several historic railway companies—starting under the Kingdom of Sardinia, later managed by the PLM (Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée), and now operated by SNCF. From Chambéry, the route climbs through the Maurienne valley, passing alpine foothills, river valleys, and multiple tunnels and viaducts. Modane is close to the Fréjus Rail Tunnel, the gateway through Mont Cenis into Italy. This tunnel, about 13.7 km long, was opened in 1871 and remains a major trans-Alpine link for both passenger and freight traffic. Throughout the journey you’ll witness a dramatic transition: from Chambéry’s valley landscapes into steeper, rugged mountain terrain, snow-capped peaks, and strategic Alpine passes.
