The grand festival of Chiapa de Corzo is steeped in symbolism, giving this religious celebration its unique identity. It is dedicated primarily to Saint Sebastian the Martyr and Saint Anthony the Abbot, both saints of the Catholic Church and faith. The "Parachico" costume consists of a white shirt and dark-colored trousers, along with a shawl worn over the trousers and tied at the waist and ankles. This shawl is adorned with embroidery or beads depicting saints, flowers, or other emblems that signify the participants' involvement in the festival. They also wear a hand-carved wooden mask, painted on a lacquered base, with a face of European features: a defined nose, light eyes, a beard, and fair skin. According to the symbolism of this attire, these features represent the characteristics of the Spanish, who colonized these lands 500 years ago.
