Buses at Southland - Melbourne Transport
In this video we see some buses at Southland Shopping Centre, a major shopping centre alongside the Nepean Highway in the southern suburb of Cheltenham. At the undercover bus interchange we see a variety of buses operated by Grenda/Ventura and Melbourne Bus Link. This was recorded in August 2013 and since then there has been some changes. Melbourne Bus Link has now become Transdev and both Transdev & Ventura have converted their buses into the orange PTV livery. Southland shopping centre is the largest in Melbourne's southern suburbs. The centre opened in 1968 and started its life on the eastern side of the Nepean Highway but expanded to the western side under a major redevelopment during the 1990's. The western side parallels the Frankston line, yet the centre does not have a railway station. The construction of Southland station became a local issue during the 2010 state election with both sides of politics promising to build a railway station at Southland. Despite this construction of a station at Southland won't begin until later this year and will be completed by 2017. The new station also won't have an integrated bus interchange meaning commuters won't be able to change between train & bus services seamlessly and instead walk over 400m between the train station & the current bus interchange, or instead stay on the bus and continue to commute to other nearby stations including Cheltenham, Highett & Mentone as they do now. Date: 16th August 2013.
