The Rise and Fall of Gibson: Why These $20k Houseboats are Now a Nightmare
Subscribe to the channel! / @legacyboats They call the old Gibson the cheapest way onto the water, and for once the bargain is real: a roomy fiberglass houseboat you can still buy for around $20,000, built simple enough to fix yourself, with engines that are basically marinized Chevy V8s. But there's one thing on these boats no broker tells you about, and it's not the leaky roof everyone warns you about. This is the real rise and fall of Gibson Houseboats, from William C. Brummett and the first $8,995 boat out of Goodlettsville, Tennessee in 1968, through the bulletproof twin Crusader 350 and 454 inboards, to the slow climb upmarket that left a budget brand fatally exposed when the 2008 recession froze credit and ended the company in 2013. We cover why the affordable Gibson 36 outlasts custom houseboats that cost thirty times as much, why the Crusader gas inboard is the smart engine and the sterndrive is the one to watch, why the flat cabin roof leaks and what a recore really costs, and the wall almost nobody mentions: how a hard insurance market, the over-30-year hull age limit, the marine survey, and "no insurance, no slip" marina rules can stop a cheap old houseboat dead at the dock, no matter how sound she is.
