Love is an experience that forces us to become philosophers, whether we like it or not. It is the most profound experience a human being can have, and we have all experienced it at some point. Making love in love is an adventure that hides all the metaphysical mysteries that the history of philosophy has grappled with. What we said in the previous chapter about Beauty applies here radically. Lovers know they are free and find their freedom in love. But it is the complete opposite of, as the saying goes, "finding your soul mate." Lovers do not necessarily fit together based on their "race, color, sex, kinship, religion, economic, social, or other status" (as Article II of the Declaration of Human Rights states). Because the great mystery is how two freedoms manage to fit together. Shakespeare provided the most basic outline for this in Romeo and Juliet. Romeo is a Montague who lives like a Montague, eats like a Montague, feels like a Montague, thinks like all Montagues, and, like all Montagues, hates the Capulets. But in the presence of Juliet, the Capulet with whom he is in love, he forgets that he is a Montague and feels free from all the ties that his social and familial status entails. The same thing happens to Juliet in her condition as a Capulet. This experience of their own freedom places them before a new world, in which it is as if they were born again, or as if they were seeing this world for the first time, as lovers sometimes declare. The people have understood this very well when they composed their love songs. It is sometimes said that this scheme of what love is only refers to "romantic love." But there is a great confusion here. What love is is one thing, and the recipe we seek to make loving compatible with the miserable course of our lives is quite another. Love opens a window to eternity, but then we must continue living in the daily passage of time. And eternity and time don't fit together at all. Therefore, the recipe for romantic love, like the recipe for marriage or polyamory, has no guarantee of working.
