I Found China's Most Carb-Loaded Breakfast

Wuhan is famous for having one of the heaviest breakfasts in all of China — and after driving 3 hours from Jiujiang to try it, I finally understand why. I headed to Shanhaiguan Road, one of Wuhan's most famous breakfast streets, to eat "guo zao" (过早) — the local word for "doing breakfast," which here is practically a sport. I tried around 10 different items, and almost every single one was deep-fried, carb-heavy, and gloriously oily. Carbs stacked on carbs. It's not the healthiest thing you'll ever eat… but it might be one of the most satisfying. There's a real reason Wuhan breakfast is this heavy. The city was historically full of physical laborers and dock workers who needed serious calories to get through a hard day's work — so the breakfast culture evolved to be filling, cheap, and energy-dense. What you're eating isn't just food; it's a window into the city's working history. I also took you through the local wet market nearby — fresh vegetables, meat, and a whole crowd of local grandmas and grandpas doing their morning grocery run. This is the everyday China that tourists almost never see.
