How was it that at the beginning of the 20th century, Russia was no richer than before Catherine the Great's reign? Why, despite the overall economic growth in the Russian Empire over 200 years, did the standard of living of ordinary people not improve? How can one calculate a country's GDP if there are no unified statistics for its most important sectors? An article was recently published at Oxford that, for the first time, summarized data on the economic development of the Russian Empire from the 1690s to the 1880s. Its authors are Russian historian Elena Korchmina and the distinguished British economist Stephen Broadberry.
