Barefoot Tracks of Whangarei: Whau Valley Dam

Whau Valley Dam provides high-quality water for Whangarei, and it is on the edge of the Pukenui Forest. Pukenui Forest is mostly lowland broadleaf forest, a type of habitat now rare in New Zealand. Kiwi and other endangered native animals live here. All dogs must be on leads. No swimming or boating. Finding the Track: At the edge of the lake, on the left where the bush starts, you will find a little "goat track" that takes you down to the back end of the lake.
