Riding on the narrow gauge railway between Västervik and Hultsfred in Sweden
This video takes you onboard a journey along the 71-kilometer narrow-gauge railway between Västervik and Hultsfred. The video is filmed from inside the train and shows the line’s varied scenery as well as what can be seen through the window during the ride across the Småland countryside. Along the route, the train passes several well-preserved station environments such as Verkebäck and Ankarsrum, along with beautiful forests, meadows, and lakes. Among other sights, you can see the crossing over the bridge at Verkebäck Bay near Verkebäck Station, Ankarsrum Station, as well as a number of classic trackside cottages and older level crossings. In Västervik, the narrow-gauge track shares rails with the standard-gauge Tjust Line. This is Sweden’s only remaining narrow-to-standard-gauge three-rail track. The Hultsfred–Västervik narrow-gauge railway has a track gauge of 891 mm (three Swedish feet). The line was inaugurated in 1879 and for a long time was an important transport route for both freight and passengers in the region. Services under SJ were discontinued in the 1980s, but the line was preserved and declared a historic monument in 2003. Today, the line is operated for tourist and heritage traffic by Tjustbygdens Järnvägsförening (TJF), mainly using classic YP railbuses manufactured by Hilding Carlsson and Hägglunds during the 1950s.
