【退役した飛行機の墓場へ】初めて訪れて1年・モハーヴェ砂漠に眠る退役機を撮影 | Aircraft Spotting at the Mojave Air & Spaceport (MHV/KMHV)

Today, for the first time in several months, I visited the Mojave Air and Space Port (MHV/KMHV) in California, which is also known as the "airplane graveyard." It has been a year since my first visit, and since this would be my last trip for 2025, I decided to return to see the retired planes and check out what had changed since then. I started filming from the supermarket parking lot located northwest of the airport. From there, I spotted several retired JAL B777s, which were (JA008D, JA8944, JA8979, JA010D, JA007D, and JA009D). There was also a Western Global Airlines MD-11(F) (N415JN) parked nearby. The number of JAL aircraft parked there had decreased compared to last year, and some had been moved to the corner of the airport, where most of the scrapping takes place. What’s more, I also noticed something unusual. When I last visited the airport in early summer, (JA010D) and (JA8944) were stored with their engines removed, but today, they were seen with their engines reattached. I became curious to see what will happen to these planes in the future and if they found a new buyer. Next, I went to the north side of the airport, where I could get a panoramic view of the airport and the surrounding area. Among the many retired aircraft in the pile, I spotted two JAL planes, (JA751J) and (JA771J), which were moved from the northeast side. I also spotted a former JAL B747-300 and ANA's first delivered Boeing 777. What's more, I also found a mostly dismantled but partially intact Air Canada Boeing 767-200 (C-GAUN). This was the legendary aircraft, famously nicknamed the "Gimli Glider," which was involved in a notable incident back in 1983. The cockpit section was missing, but it was recently purchased by a Canadian museum in June 2025 and the section was transported back to the town of Gimli in Manitoba, where the emergency landing had taken place. Finally, I went to the southeast side of the airport, where a large number of retired ANA B777 aircraft were stored right in front of me. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ANA retired many of its older Boeing 777s in 2021. Back in 2014, the airline had ordered the Boeing 777X, which was under development, as a successor to the B777-300(ER). However, Boeing continued to delay the delivery year after year, and it has now been further pushed back to 2027. For this reason, I personally thought that ANA retired these jets a little too early, as some were less than 13 to 15 years old at the time they were withdrawn from use. Behind me, there was a Boeing 707 as well as the legendary L-1011 TriStar owned by Northrop Grumman, which was undergoing maintenance. This L-1011, in particular, is over 51 years old and is the last aircraft in the world still in active service. Apart from filming the retired aircraft, the airport was also hosting its monthly 'Plane Crazy Saturday' event, which today featured the arrival of an Aero L-39 from the Patriots Jet Team, a civilian aerobatic formation team. At the start of the event, I was able to watch three aircraft flying in formation during takeoff. This team is quite similar to Japan’s Blue Impulse, although they are operated by the JASDF. Later, the aircraft parked directly in front of the event attendees, allowing everyone to observe it up close and take photos with the pilots. After spending a few hours at the airport, the pilots left and waved goodbye to the crowd. After the aerobatic team departed, the event came to an end.
