250 YEARS OF FREEDOM -- An Independence Day Anthem

WHY I WROTE THIS SONG I wrote *“Two Hundred Fifty Years of Freedom”* to celebrate America’s 250th birthday and to honor the long journey that brought us to this moment. This song is not about one political party, one president, or one point of view. It is about the larger American story. For 250 years, people have served, sacrificed, worked, struggled, hoped, and carried this country forward. Soldiers defended it. Families supported it. Teachers, nurses, farmers, workers, veterans, and ordinary citizens helped build it. America has never been perfect. We have made mistakes. We have fallen short of our own promises. But generation after generation, people have stood up and tried to move the country closer to the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice. That is what inspired this anthem. I wanted it to sound large enough for the National Mall, the White House, or a major Independence Day celebration. I did not want a quiet little song by the fireplace. I wanted orchestra, choir, brass, drums, fireworks, and a melody that could rise over Washington, D.C. The main message is simple: Freedom is not something we inherit and then forget. It is something each generation must protect, improve, and pass forward. At 79 years old, I have lived through many changes in America. I have seen good times, hard times, division, progress, sacrifice, and hope. Through all of it, I still believe that our country is worth caring for. This song is my way of saying thank you to those who came before us, honoring those who serve today, and reminding the next generation that the American story is still being written. Two hundred fifty years have passed. The promise is still alive. And we are still singing. — Bob Santero *I Still Sing* Real stories from daily life at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC — shared through original songs, humor, and reflections by Bob Santero.
