Embryology | Mesoderm
Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this embryology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy presents a detailed overview of the mesoderm, the middle germ layer formed during gastrulation. This lecture explains how the mesoderm gives rise to many of the body’s major systems, including the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, urogenital, and connective tissues. We begin by dividing the mesoderm into its three major regions: the paraxial, intermediate, and lateral plate mesoderm. Zach explains how the paraxial mesoderm segments into somites, which give rise to the dermatome (skin dermis), myotome (skeletal muscle), and sclerotome (vertebrae and ribs). The intermediate mesoderm is shown to form the kidneys, ureters, gonads, and reproductive ducts. We then explore the lateral plate mesoderm, which splits into two layers: the somatic (parietal) and splanchnic (visceral) mesoderm. These give rise to the body wall, limb skeleton, connective tissue, and much of the cardiovascular system, including the heart and blood vessels. The lecture also touches on the origin of the adrenal cortex, spleen, and lining of body cavities from this layer.
