SANADOR Clinical Hospital is consolidating its status as a center of excellence in pediatric medicine in Romania. 81 children with congenital heart defects have been successfully operated on in the last three years, through the pediatric cardiovascular surgery program. Dr. Doris Andronescu, General Director of SANADOR, explained more about how pediatric cardiovascular surgery offers a new chance at life to children with heart defects: "These pediatric cardiovascular surgery interventions mean, in fact, a new chance at life for children. It is a great joy for us, because this happens at our home. We see how they grow, how they go to school, make plans, and the family is happy with them". Costache, Head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Section, Dr. Mihai Chiloflischi, Primary Care Physician for Cardiovascular Surgery, Dr. Florin Ionescu, Pediatric Cardiology Specialist, and Alessandra Stoicescu, President of the Mereu Aproape Foundation. The results of the program and the importance of rapid access to treatment for children with heart defects were presented. The medical team is led by Prof. Dr. Victor Costache, Head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Section at SANADOR Clinical Hospital. Medical performance, achieved through multidisciplinary teams "A team is needed. Medical performance is not done by one person. It is done by an entire team, a team led by Prof. Victor Costache and made up of doctors and nurses from Romania, but also from international centers," explained Dr. Doris Andronescu. 81 lives saved through the pediatric cardiovascular surgery program "We operated on 128 children, and 500-600 children were seen for this intervention. It is very important that we managed to organize this cardiovascular surgery and interventional cardiology program at SANADOR. We have all these children saved. They are from all over the country," said Prof. Dr. Victor Costache, Head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department at SANADOR Clinical Hospital. The doctor explained that there were children operated on from all areas of Romania and that rapid access to the intervention is essential for their evolution. Why is rapid diagnosis of heart defects important "As long as someone raises a suspicion of a heart defect, then somehow they are lucky to reach me and I can figure out what it is and together with the entire team we determine the next steps for the therapeutic solution," explained Dr. Florin Ionescu, specialist in Pediatric Cardiology. Within the SANADOR Clinical Hospital, therapeutic solutions can be established quickly, so that children benefit from the necessary interventions in the shortest possible time. The challenges of pediatric cardiac surgery "Infantile cardiac surgery is a difficult medical field, it requires very expensive resources, very well-trained medical teams, because the age of children with cardiac anomalies who undergo such interventions varies from a few days to a few years", said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doru Herghelegiu, Director of the SANADOR Clinical Hospital. SANADOR, training center in pediatric cardiovascular surgery "The most important thing is the team. The soul of the team is Dr. Florin Ionescu, who returned from the UK and has been with us for several years. Also, the entire anesthesia and extracorporeal circulation team is with us", said Prof. Dr. Victor Costache.
