Antipolis knows a considerable development and becomes an important emporium where many ships transit, delivering oil, wine, and ceramics. After the reign of Constantine, the Roman Empire collapsed, leaving the Antipolis region in ruins, with Saracen bands making frequent incursions on the shores. Louis XIV entrusted the reinforcement of the city's defenses to the famous military architect Vauban, who redesigned the fortifications before the city experienced a terrible siege in 1746. Long disputed between France and the House of Savoy, the county of Nice became definitively French in 1860.
