Sydney's train network will undergo a major overhaul following an independent review into two days of rail chaos in May caused by a single faulty wire at Homebush that had been marked defective for five years. The government has announced a $458 million maintenance blitz including new handheld laser devices to replace binocular inspections, upgraded tracks, signals and wiring, plus improved passenger communication systems.
