For centuries, El Cid has been transformed into a legend whose true story has been heavily embellished, sometimes making it difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. But behind this aura of a semi-legendary hero, idealized as the perfect prototype of a medieval knight, lies the story of a true warlord who played a fundamental role in the historical development of the Ebro basin and the eastern Iberian Peninsula. He had to contend, sometimes as an ally, and other times as an enemy, with the Kingdom of Aragon, and even with the Taifa kingdoms of Zaragoza and Albarracín.
