Chaconne - Sofia Gubaidulina- performed by Ilona Timchenko

Chaconne - Sofia Gubaidulina- performed by pianist Ilona Timchenko Taken from the album 'Echoes of a Hidden Legacy' with work of Albert Semyonovich Leman (1915–1998). The album also contains this Chaconne of his student Sofia Gubaidulina. From 1971 to 1997, Leman served as professor and head of the Composition Department at the Moscow Conservatory, shaping generations of composers, among them Sofia Gubaidulina. His students affectionately called themselves “Leman’s children,” reflecting the depth of artistic commitment and personal trust he inspired. To contextualize Leman’s legacy, the album where this Gubaidulina’s Chaconne is taken from, is sandwiched between two pieces by leman himself. Written in 1962 during Gubaidulina's studies at the Moscow Conservatory, the work was her first commissioned composition. Highly virtuosic and rich in contrast, it reimagines the traditional chaconne as a succession of powerful chordal variations with a strong dynamic drive toward the end. Including her music here completes a symbolic arc — from teacher to student, from legacy to continuation. Ilona Timchenko tells about her own relationship with Leman: "My relationship with this music is inseparable from my relationship with Leman himself. Beyond being my teacher, he entrusted me with his artistic vision at its most intimate level. I inherited his last piano — the very instrument on which these works were composed — and prepared this repertoire on it. Recording the music in this way creates a rare continuity of sound, touch, and resonance, bridging past and present in the most literal sense."
