Fiasko operacji „Kiebitz” [ucieczka Otto Kretschmera]

During World War II, over 34,000 German soldiers, representing all branches of the armed forces, were held in Canadian POW camps. Over 600 of them attempted to escape, several losing their lives. However, the planned group escape, which took place in the autumn of 1943, deserves particular attention due to its scale. Even the German Navy was involved in its implementation. Consequently, the entire operation was given the codename "Kiebitz" (German for "lapwing"). It is worth noting that throughout the escape preparations, the German POWs in Canada remained in constant contact with their command in Germany. The Kriegsmarine hoped that the entire operation would be a huge propaganda success.
