This is the story of Yoshiko Yamaguchi—a woman who, for 26 years, couldn't reveal her true name as "Li Xianglan." Born in 1920 in Manchuria, China, this Japanese girl was adopted by her father's Chinese friend and given the name "Li Xianglan." Eventually, through the Manchurian Film Association's national policy, she was molded into a "Chinese actress," becoming a star with immense popularity in both Japan and China. However, she couldn't tell anyone she was Japanese. In China, she was accused of "abandoning Chinese pride," and in Japan, she was ridiculed with "Are you even Japanese?" For 26 years, she had no place in either country. After the war, she faced a military trial for treason and the threat of execution. What saved her life was her childhood friend, Lyuba, and a single piece of paper hidden inside a doll.
